Kensington History

Photocopy of handwritten document regarding establishment of Kensington community in 1872. Written by Mrs. Barbara Ann Bark, great grandmother of Douglas Day, of 344 East 116th Street in Kensington. Written at the bottom on the document and lined through "Mom had this - it looks like her handwriting so perhaps was copied from somewhere else. It`s interesting". Date unknown. Transcript typed for this record, attached.

Kensington Station Looking North c. 1905

Ground level view on Illinois Central right of way, looking north at Kensington Avenue. Left to right, Front Street storefronts, 115th Street Stations with clock, pedestrian overpass in distance at Pullman/111th, brick building behind water tank appears to be original (1880s). Kensington Station was for through trains to New York, etc. The other station with the clock is likely the commuter station. Pullman smokestack in seen in the distance.

Parise Family

Images of Valentino Parise and family. Parise immigrated to Chicago from Venice, Italy. He purchased land at 400 E. Kensington (Kinsinton and South Park) where he operated an office for the Cunard steamship lines and later opened the Kensington Buffet Company (a saloon), a restaurant and neighborhood bar. Also included is a paper written by Tony Parise on the history of his family and their businesses in Kensington for an American History class, 3/19/81.
