Even distribution of the coke means that during the quenching process, the least amount of water needs to be used to cool the coke to the right temperature for dumping on the coke wharf. Postcard! Copy? | Rights

A full oven of coke has now been pushed and distributed into the quench car. The door machine and coke guide can now move aside so the coke oven doors can be cleaned before they are closed and the oven recharged with coal. Postcard! Copy? | Rights

Once in the quench tower, the coke is treated to high-pressure water jets to cool the coke while still in the quench car. Postcard! Copy? | Rights

The partially cooled coke is now discharged onto the coke wharf for draining and additional cooling. The locomotive moves during this discharge to evenly distribute the coke along the wharf. Postcard! Copy? | Rights

A closer view of the wharf. When the coke is sufficiently cool, gates on the wharf (not visible here) are opened to allow the coke to settle onto a conveyor for transport to a screening and sizing station. Postcard! Copy? | Rights
