Title |
Waterways - Calumet River Life Saving Station |
Description |
Located between the U. S. Steel South Slip and the EJ&E RR swing bridge across the Calumet River was the site of the original South Chicago lighthouse. The location was later used as the site of the U.S. Life Saving Service (later Coast Guard) South Chicago Station. This building was used as living quarters for the station keeper and area lighthouse keepers. The Coast Guard moved to Calumet Park in 1934, and the site remains in the possession of the United States Government and Army Corps of Enginers. The property was surrounded by the huge South Works steel mill. The photos show the building in its heyday and shortly before it was demolished (1963). |
