Joseph Guest emmigrated from Dublin, Ireland in 1910 and moved to Pullman. He worked as a chef and manager of the Pullman Executives Club on 111th Street and lived in the carriage house (no longer in existence) behind the club. He purchased the house to the right of this image in 1912 and built the bakery/grocery store in 1916. Man in front of the building is Mr. Guest. View of bakery with delivery truck parked in front. This non-Beman building was built in the backyard of corner house, later a boat shop, and later (1947-1980), Bob`s Sugar Bowl, a soda fountain.

OSC's wrought-iron fence behind them, curbing and sidewalk visible. One man wearing dark pants, vest and long coat, bearded, wearing hat, with hands tucked into pants pockets stands at the rear of horse. Another bearded man wearing dark pants, vest, and knee-length coat, wearing hat cocked over right ear is holding horse's bridle and reins; this might be John Flynn. Typed note on front reads "John Flynn, of Springfield, Ill. being duly sworn, says that he purchased this horse of Abraham Lincoln on the ____ day of January A.D. 1860, just previous to his departure for Washington, and that this picture was taken on the day of Lincoln's funeral, in 1865. (ink signature of John Flynn); State of Illinois / Sangamon County / Submitted and sworn to, before me this 20th day of May 1893. / (ink signature of Edward Cahill) / Clerk of the Sangamon Circuit Court." Probably the sale was January 1861, not January 1860. Man at right presumed to be Flynn, man at left unknown, as he seems to be neither Rev. Brown nor Rev. Trevan. Presumably Old Bob's new handler, employee of Flynn.

Color illustrated broadside advertising University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's exhibit titled "A Nation in Tears: 150 Years after Lincoln's Death" presented by the university's Rare Book and Manuscript Library and Illinois History and Lincoln Collections to commemorate the sesquicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Text begins: "Few events in American history have had a greater impact on Americans than the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. That tragedy precipitated an unprecedented outpouring of grief and commemoration, especially because it followed hard upon the collapse of the Confederate cause. Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865, only five days after Robert E. Lee's surrender to U.S. Grant at Appomattox."
